Amazing science in P4/5
31st Jan 2017
Last week in P4/5 we carried out a science experiment on 'How to send a secret message'
The first thing we had to do was collect the items needed for our experiment:
- 100g of Baking soda
- Grapefruit juice
- Water
- Cotton buds
- White paper
We followed the instructions on how to conduct the experiment:
- We started of by mixing the water and baking soda together (we had to be very careful when doing this, so Miss McCormack helped us!)
- Next we used a cotton bud which had been dipped in the baking soda and water, to write a secret message on the white paper.
- Then we had to wait for it to dry (we decided to leave them over night to be able to get a better result)
- The next day we got another cotton bud and dipped it in grapefruit juice.
- We rubbed this across the page with the secret message on it.
We were amazed to see our secret messages appearing before our very eyes!! The writing was now in a shade of yellow!
We learned that a reaction had taken place between the baking soda and the citric acid in the grapefruit juice!
